Scarecrow Pin

I think of scarecrows as the season turns to fall. They are such a nice addition to a fall decor for inside or outside the home. I thought about constructing one with my grand children on their last visit but then had a better idea. We made scarecrow pins instead. Here is what you will need:

    Supplies
  • Sculpey III oven bake clay ( I bought the pack that had 12 colors in it .
  • Oven proof glass surface to bake the pins.
  • An Oven
  • Toothpicks
  • Pin backs (jewelry)
  • Glue
Read the directions for the Sculpey clay before you begin. They have information about what type of surface to build your creation on and other things that are good to know before you get started.

Choose a color you want for the pants of the scarecrow. I made a long rectangle and split it half way up the middle for the pant legs and left the rest intact for the crotch and waist. Push the toothpick through the top of the pants until you come to the end of the crotch. We made our trouser legs long enough so we could just flip them up to form the shoes. We rounded the edges so it appeared to be the toes of the shoes and made a line separating them from the pants.

Choose the shirt color and form a smaller rectangle piece of clay. Push the shirt over the toothpick so it meets the pants. Blend the clay so they are joined at the waistband and add some clay for a belt. Try and keep your size proportions so it isn't so large that it covers the entire toothpick. You still have to add the head.

Take some clay of a coordinating color and make the scarecrow a jacket. Make two thin long rectangles the size you want for the sleeves. We placed the ends of the rectangles over the toothpick to hold it in place. Then we formed a collar from the two ends we put over the toothpicks.

Make two long rectangles for the front of the coat and blend the clay together with the collar to make the jacket one piece. Decorate the jacket as you wish.

Take a piece of the clay in the color you want for the head and shape it into a ball placing it on the toothpick.

Take some yellow clay and place it on the head, around the neck, arms, and legs as if straw is coming out. Take a toothpick and make vertical lines on the clay to make it appear more straw like.

Add a hat with the color of your choice.

Design a face for your scarecrow.

Bake the scarecrow following the directions given on the clay for baking.

When it is finished, let it dry and glue a pin back on it.
Crafts projects can be an educational experience for children. During this project my grand children and I discussed shapes and colors. We also discussed the history of scarecrows. I've added a link about the history of scarecrows you can share with your children. scarecrow history
