Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy are such a classic icon of a bygone era.
Stories about Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy were written by American writer Johnny Gruelle in 1915 and was then later introduced in book form along with a doll in 1918.

The stories were created for his daughter, Marcella. I believe the little girl had a rag doll passed on to her from John Gruelle’s mother.
The doll was missing a face and a name when his daughter brought the rag doll to him. He drew a face on the doll and combined a name for her from James Whitcomb Riley’s two poems, “The Raggedy Man” and “Little Orphant Annie”.
Raggedy Ann was born and would be embraced by children around the world as they read the stories and adventures of the two dolls written and illustrated by John Gruelle.
Raggedy Ann’s brother, Raggedy Andy, was introduced to the public in a sequel to the first book.
Sadly Marcella died at age 13 when her school vaccinated her for smallpox without her parents permission.
Raggedy Ann and Andy lived on to be cherished and loved by children through out the years.
Raggedy Ann has been a doll in our family lineage as well. Mine from childhood was passed to my daughter and now my grand-daughter has her in her Raggedy Ann collection.
My doll is 48 years old!

As a doll collector I have my original Knickerbocker Raggedy Ann 12 inch doll from the early 1970′s…:-) I have barbie dolls, bay dolls, rag dolls, celluloid dolls, rubber dolls, ranging from the 1950′s through to a new doll I bought two weeks ago.
