stocking event

My husband is very security conscious. I have to admit sometimes I think he is a kill joy about all of the security measure he has us follow. I also have to tell you that there are more times he is proven right than eccentric.

Before getting married we were friends for several years. It was his friendship that literally saved my life when I became a stalking victim for eight long years. He set security precautions up for me around my home and taught me how to be smart and pro active about not letting personal information fall into the hands of the wrong people.

This Christmas I’m excited about the little stocking stuffer gift that will be in his holiday stocking this year. It is a membership card to the LifeLock Plan.
Here are all the wonderful features he will be receiving through the plan.

  • Alerts of potential threats–both credit and noncredit related
  • Online access to a personalized dashboard showing current threats
  • Relentless identity monitoring for exposure of your personal information
  • Member services with local phone support—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year
  • Stolen or lost wallet remediation services to help cancel and replace credit and debit cards*
  • Comprehensive recovery services if you become a victim of identity theft on our watch.
  • The option to extend your line of defense with LifeLock Credit Score Manager™ protection.

LifeLock has some pretty impressive credentials besides the fact that they are first in the industry to offer proactive identity theft protection they also have partnerships with FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA), National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA).

Since my husband will be signed up under a LifeLock plan the company’s identity theft protection services begin immediately and are backed by their ‘Service Guarantee’. Plus he can access the member services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

I think my husband will think this is one of the best presents I’ve ever given him! With a LifeLock membership I will really be zeroing in on his interests which is what great gift giving is all about.

Visit their site and learn all the great plans and features they have. You won’t just be giving someone a gift, you’ll be giving your loved one ‘Peace of Mind’.

LifeLock is allowing one of my readers to put a LifeLock Membership Plan in one of their stockings too so enter to win.

    Mail Theft

Vishing—voicecalls made to your landline or mobile phone—are an effective way for thieves to get your personal information.

    • November 2, 2012 at 11:32 am

How does vishing work? Can this happen when you get a phone call, you answer and say hi and no one answers?

Darlene, from what I’ve heard, this usually falls in the category of “social engineering”. Translation: A confidence job, where some very sincere sounding person says they’re from your bank or credit card company, or the IT department of your company, and says they need your account number, PIN code, security code, whatever.

Also, not to plug Gmail too much, and I understand why people would not want to use it, but they have VERY good spam filters. Also, most browsers these days have a setting to warn you of a suspicious site.

This isn’t strictly a LifeLock thing; it’s more a matter of keeping your guard up.

Mail theft. One day I received a call from a Bank that I don’t bank at asking if I had signed over our tax refund check to someone I had never heard of. Obviously not but between the bank and contacting the IRS and the bank contacting them to tell them what happened it took months to get the new check. Oh and the bank only realized the issue because the account the person tried to process them through was already tagged for unusual activity and the fact that the check was put in the night drop box (not sure what it is called) with other people’s tax refund checks too none of which belonged to the name on the account.

Overlays: Hidden devices can be installed almost imperceptibly on any ATM, enabling thieves to swipe your account information when you insert your card, and then transmit your account information to a nearby computer for future fraudulent use.

They mention phishing, on-line theft and several others, but the one that got me was handing my CC to someone who swiped it out of my sight. Be warned!

My grandpas home recently gotten broken into, they took off with over $600 worth of jewelry and his birth certificate was gone. He’s worried now he will have identity theft problems. It’s scary, can happen to anybody, even a innocent older man like him.

Be very wary of giving your credit card to anyone who swipes it out of your sight. I’d even go to the cashier myself rather than letting the waiter do it.

Over-the-shoulder theft is probably about the 3rd or 4th most prevalent kind.

The available credit monitoring is very useful-often the first sign of identity theft is a new credit card being opened, or someone changing your information.
