Arlo Needs Glasses is a children’s book by Barney Saltzberg. I saw the book’s magic the minute I looked through it. It is a book that will show children that not only getting glasses can be an adventure but that reading is fun.
The book has a cute story line about a dog that needs glasses but it is also an interactive book with sliding parts and pop-up fun with the magic of turning an uninterested little five-year old with an attitude problem into a little five-year old that begins interacting with the book and listening to the story.
Mr. L. has a tendency to be stubborn (I wish I could say I didn’t know who he inherited that from but he is a chip off the old block.)
I thought it would be a fun to take a break from playing and read Arlo Needs Glasses.
Mr. L is still showing his stubborn nature on page 1 but I believed in this book and I knew soon Mr. L’s interest would soon be peaked.
Arlo’s owner discovers that Arlo may not be able to see well when he isn’t able to see well enough to catch a ball.
While reading this book children learn some vocabulary words like ‘phoropter’, which is a machine used to test vision, and that there is fun in choices of picking glasses if you need to wear them.
The reader gets to help Arlo try on different styles of glasses.
Arlo decides on a pair of glasses and Mr. L tries them on as well.
Mr. L and Arlo discover they have something in common.
They both love to read so we read the book again!
Although Mr. L is stubborn he is also a great test subject to see the value of a book. Arlo Needs Glasses passed with flying colors and I’m sure your children/ grandchildren will feel the same way.
