Every body needs an emergency plan no matter the state you reside.
New Jersey? Prepare for those winters and rogue storms that are headed for some other state but switch their course to you… Irene, Florida braced for her but it turned and landed there instead!
New York? Winter snow that turns into blizzards and no electricity. Mid West? Tornadoes!
Florida? Hurricanes and we even have a hurricane season we prepare for by going up to the attic and getting all our hurricane preparedness within reach if we need it.
The whole point is that no matter where you live the weather is going to cause some emergencies and smart people stay prepared. Most keep a few things on hand but how prepared are you really? Do you have an emergency plan for where you will meet family members if a situation occurs when your separated by work or travel?
Most don’t but it is a real good idea to discuss it and write it down so everyone remembers the initial plan. My husband and I have two emergency meeting places established. One plan is established to meet if one of us is at home and the other out of the house. The other location was chose if emergency strikes if we are both away from home and at work. Do you have your meeting place planned?
New York has a plan and they want everyone to establish a plan as well. If you are a resident of New York you can access a web page to find out the order in which the city will plow the streets to help you prepare.
They are well on top of the situation and even have a facebook page to help people come up with an emergency meeting place. Visit
New York City Office of Emergency Management on facebook. Take the Readiness Challenge and then leave a comment telling them what steps you are taking to be prepared for a winter storm or any type of emergency in the New Year.
If you are not in a snow state but in a warmer weather state like Florida then you still need a plan on getting by without electricity for long periods of a time. We may not face freezing to death but we do face weeks and weeks of no electricity and loss of water due to hurricane and weather conditions.
For tips on how to be prepared in that case then go visit my two favorite survival guys(not affiliated with New York City Office of Emergency Management) and learn about water resource facts.
