Clay that is too dry
a. If clay is too hard it cannot be kneaded because it takes too much pressure. Cutting it with a potters wire in approximately 1 to 2 inch thick slabs can recycle stiff clay.
b. Lay down fabric (not towels). Lay a slab of clay on top of the fabric. Continue to alternate a layer of fabric then a slab of clay. Fold the fabric over and around the clay. Try to have all clay in contact with fabric.
c. Take the fabric covered clay and put it back in the bag the clay was purchased. Take several other bags (minimum of three.) { Trash bags work fine just make sure there is no holes} and put the fabric covered clay in these bags. Keep all bags open to have access to the fabric wrapped clay.
d. For every 25 pounds of clay add about 1 cup of water to the fabric covered clay.
e. Seal all bags so that if laid on the side water will not leak out.
f. Wait 24 to 48 hours and remove a hen egg size of clay to check for moisture.
g. If clay is still to stiff then open all bags and add 1/2 cup of water in bag with fabric-covered clay.
h. If clay is too moist then repeat direction for clay that is too moist.
i. If clay is just right then you are ready to knead and wedge your clay.
